Lap-Band Surgery

About Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery
During LAP-BAND surgery, a plastic ring is placed around the top of the stomach to limit the amount and rate of food consumption. This helps you eat less and feel full more quickly.
This procedure is performed laparoscopically through several small incisions in the belly. Using small surgical tools and a camera, Dr. Zerey wraps a device around the upper part of your stomach to form a ring. He tightens the band once you are healed from the surgery. It’s a simple office procedure, usually done 4-5 times in the first year.
Benefits and Expected Weight Loss
This procedure may be less invasive and possibly safer than gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery. Weight loss with this surgery is usually gradual but steady—patients usually lose around 50% of their excess weight, with a significant improvement in related health and quality of life. Results vary, though, and as with all weight-loss procedures, long-term success is dependent on making and maintaining important lifestyle changes, as well as regular follow up appointments with Dr. Zerey.
Risks of Surgery
As noted, LAP-BAND surgery tends to carry less risk than other weight loss procedures. Problems that can occur after placement of the gastric band include obstruction, band slippage, access port problems, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux, esophageal dilation and poor nutrition. Dr. Zerey will discuss all of these risks in detail with you before deciding to proceed with surgery.
