Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
At the Sansum Clinic Bariatric Surgery Center, we offer a full range of life-changing weight loss surgery options, including gastric bypass surgery, a popular and proven procedure. Our board-certified surgeon, Marc Zerey, MD, performs the procedure laparoscopically, which may offer a host of benefits, such as less pain and scarring, fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
About Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
“Roux-en-Y” gastric bypass is considered the gold standard for weight loss surgery by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). During this surgery, only a small part of the stomach is used to create a new thumb-size pouch. This smaller stomach is connected to the middle portion of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine. The intestines are reconnected down-stream so that less nutrient absorption occurs.
Benefits and Expected Weight Loss
Gastric bypass surgery has been around for more than 30 years and has proven to be a reliable solution for major weight loss. Generally, patients lose around 70 percent of their excess weight, and, like gastric sleeve surgery, the procedure offers more immediate results compared to adjustable gastric band surgery, though is more invasive. Gastric bypass is usually safe, offers significant improvement in weight-related medical problems (like type diabetes and high blood pressure) and allows for long-term maintenance. Results vary, though, and as with all weight loss procedures, success is dependent on making and maintaining important lifestyle changes, as well as regular follow up appointments with Dr. Zerey.
Risks of Surgery
Risks of gastric bypass surgery include poor absorption of iron resulting in iron deficiency anemia; poor absorption of calcium causing metabolic bone disease, chronic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency; and dumping syndrome, which can occur as a result of rapid emptying of stomach contents into the small intestine, or by consuming too much sugar or carbohydrates.
