Sansum Clinic’s Executive Team helps provide quality healthcare for the California Central Coast communities we serve by recruiting the best physicians and continuing to provide the most up-to-date facilities and advanced medical technologies to serve the healthcare needs of our patients. As a nonprofit organization we provide many vital community health services and resources and as one of the area’s largest employers, we recognize the value of our many employees and their role in providing excellent service and care.
  

Kurt N. Ransohoff, MD, FACP

Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Ransohoff joined Sansum Clinic in 1992. Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Ransohoff earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine and a medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California. He was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine from 1989-1992, and Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor from 1988-1989.  Dr. Ransohoff was Chairman of our Internal Medicine Department from 1992-1994, and Assistant Medical Director from 1994-1997. He has been Medical Director since 1997, President since 1998, and CEO since 2002.

Chad Hine, MBA

Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Hine is a highly analytical financial executive with in-depth experience in the healthcare industry. His exceptional evaluation and planning skills make him a respected and proven leader. Before joining Sansum Clinic, Mr. Hine was CFO at Quincy Medical Group in Illinois where he oversaw all aspects of financial performance and operations for the organization and led a substantial financial turnaround that improved profitability by more than 100 percent. Prior to that he was principal and co-owner of investment bank and consultancy CEO Strategic Solutions, LLC. Mr. Hine began his career with Bank of America where he was Assistant Vice President in charge of underwriting and approving credit facilities for middle market businesses. He earned a B.S. in Accounting and Finance from Purdue University and an M.B.A. with a focus in finance and entrepreneurship from USC, where he graduated with honors.

Tom Colbert

Vice President of Information Technology, Chief Information Officer

Tom Colbert joined Sansum Clinic in 1989 as a financial consultant. He was appointed Director, Information Technology in 1992, and Chief Information Officer in 1999. Previously, Mr. Colbert owned and operated businesses, including gemstone import, clothing manufacturing and underwater antiques salvage. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon. He is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and has been a presenter at national and regional healthcare information technology conferences.


Alexander Bauer, MBA, CPA, CHC

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Bauer is a financial leader with an extensive background in the healthcare industry, bringing a history of building consensus for difficult changes in systems and finance processes. He finds driving a culture of accountability adds value to operating organizations. Mr. Bauer has the expertise to support rapidly changing care and reimbursement models, evolving business models and new care delivery systems. He was recognized by the Advisory Board for building a highly effective Analytics team and for his collaboration with Physician Leadership obtaining NCQA Medical Home Certification for five clinics.

Before joining Sansum Clinic, Mr. Bauer was Vice President and CFO for Renown Health, Nevada’s only integrated non-profit Health System. Prior to Renown Health, he worked as a Financial Manager of Area Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery at Kaiser Permanente and as the Business Manager and Consultant of Ambulatory Care at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Mr. Bauer received his Bachelor in Finance and Accounting from Ruhr Universitat in Bochum, Germany and his MBA with a focus in Technology Innovations Management from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Mr. Bauer is also certified in Healthcare Compliance by the Healthcare Compliance Association.

Karen Handy, MPH

Vice President of Operations

Karen Handy is a graduate of Stanford University and received her Master’s in Public Health from UCLA. Prior to joining Sansum Clinic, she worked for more than 13 years with Sutter Health/Palo Alto Medical Foundation in several roles, most recently as director of operations in primary care and weight management. Karen has devoted much of her career to helping patients and communities improve their health and reduce their risk for disease, including writing a healthy lifestyle blog and articles for Sutter Health’s award-winning consumer health website. As an operations leader, Karen has been dedicated to improving the patient experience, with a focus on service and quality excellence as well as operational efficiency.

Marjorie Newman, MD

Assistant Medical Director

Marjorie P. Felcher Newman, MD, joined Sansum Clinic as Assistant Medical Director in 2000. Previously, Dr. Newman was Executive Director of New York University Health Center where she also practiced internal medicine. Dr. Newman earned her medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, following completion of a bachelor of arts degree in biology at Barnard College/Columbia University where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY. She is board certified in internal medicine. Her academic appointments include Clinical Assistant Professor of medicine at New York University Medical Center and Clinical Instructor of medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Susan Kennedy

Vice President of Human Resources

Susan Kennedy was born and raised in New Jersey where she graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She began her career in Social Work working in Los Angeles hospitals and nursing homes. After a career change to Human Resources, she went to UCLA to receive her certificate in Human Resources Management. From there Ms. Kennedy worked for a variety of health care providers including Hawthorne Medical Group, HealthCare Partners and Facey Medical Foundation. She stepped out of the healthcare arena for a number of years to work for a small research and development company in Santa Barbara, Miravant Medical Technologies. Ms. Kennedy joined Sansum Clinic as the Director of Human Resources in 2005 and was promoted to Vice President of Human Resources in 2007.

Matthew Kunkel, MHA

Vice President of Oncology Services, Ridley-Tree Cancer Center at Sansum Clinic

Mr. Kunkel is a healthcare operations leader with extensive experience in clinical operations, financial management and strategic planning. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. John’s University in Minnesota and his Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) from the University of Minnesota.
 
Before joining Sansum Clinic, Mr. Kunkel was the Director of Business Operations and Finance at Stanford Health Care where he was a senior member of the leadership team serving the Cardiovascular service line and worked in collaboration with the Cancer service line. Prior to Stanford Health Care, Mr. Kunkel worked as a Director of Clinical Operations at Sutter Health’s Palo Alto Medical Foundation, leading the clinical operations, financial management and strategic direction of over 20 medical specialty outpatient departments and was a senior member of the Cancer service line leadership team, serving regional cancer centers across the South Bay Area. Additionally, he brings a diverse set of past academic and community-based professional experiences that include the Mayo Clinic, Kaiser Permanente in Denver, CO and Sutter Health throughout Northern California.

Jonathan Andrews, MHA, CNMT

Associate Vice President of Diagnostic Imaging and Ancillary Services

After his service in the United States Marine Corps, Jonathan Andrews received his Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, NY, and went on to earn his Master of Health Administration from Suffolk University in Boston, MA. Jonathan comes to us from Kaiser Permanente, Northwest where he served as the Regional Director of Imaging Services though has spent the bulk of his career on the east coast to include Johns Hopkins Health System and Massachusetts General Hospital.
